In January 2017, Scannell signed an extension to his contract with Munster. Scannell was nominated by his teammates to be the 2017 Munster Rugby Senior Players of the Year. In December 2018, Scannell signed a two year contract extension with Munster, which will allow him to remain in the province at least until June 2021.

Scannell earned his 100th cap for the province in their 39–22 defeat away to French club Racing 92 in round 5 of the 2019–20 Champions Cup on 12 January 2020, and he captained Munster for the first time in their 2019–20 Pro14 round 12 fixture away to Italian side Zebre on 21 February 2020, though Scannell left the field injured during the first-half of Munster’s 28–0 win.

Scannell was selected in the Ireland squad to play in the first two rounds of 2017 Six Nations Championship. Scannell made his debut in Ireland on 11 February 2017 when, because of captain Rory Best’s sickness, he played against Italy in the Six Nations. Scannell was also selected for the squad for 2017 Summer Tour against Japan and the United States. Scannell made his debut for Ireland in the test against the United States on 10 June 2017. He scored the 55-19 victory in Red Bull Arena, New Jersey. They became the first Munster siblings ever to represent Ireland in professional rugby when Rory, Scannell’s older brother, was called up in the test to replace him. Scannell was called up to replace Rory Best, the captain of Ireland’s team to tour Australia. He went on to play in the second and third test in Ireland’s historic series win.
