Tolson joined Hyde United on July 2003, and then played six matches with Mossley the month after. In October 2003, he joined Stalybridge Celtic and stayed with them until January 2004. After returning to Hyde in October 2003, he was named Assistant Manager of the club in Jul 2007, before being promoted to Player-Manager in September 2008. The new board of directors relieved him of his duties after eight years of service to the club as a manager, assistant manager and player. In all competitions, he had scored 82 goals.
In 2018, he took a full-time coaching job in with American club FC Wisconsin. |
He joined Altrincham in June 2011 as the assistant manager to Lee Sinnott. He was the assistant manager to Lee Sinnott and helped the club win promotion via play-offs to Conference National. From March 2016 to the end of the season, Sinnott was replaced by Tolson as caretaker manager.

Tolson was born in Walsall, Staffordshire. He began his career at Oldham Athletic. Later, he joined York City, where he was the top scorer in 1996-97, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. This included one goal as York defeated Everton, a Premier League side, 3-2 in Round 2 of the League Cup.
Leigh RMI released him in January 2003. He joined Kettering Town the following month. A month later, he signed for Halifax Town.
