Neil Hallett, born 1980, is an English rugby union player who has played at full-back or centre. He is also a Wimbledon coach. Hallett, a great kicker, is most well-known for his time at Esher, where he scored more than 1,300 points in all competitions. He is also a prolific scorer in tier 3 history (2nd all time as of 2016-17), with more than 1,400 league points from four clubs, including Esher Trailfinders and Ealing Trailfinders. Hallett, in addition to playing club rugby, has captained Surrey (winning three County Championship Shield titles), and been capped for England by the Barbarians. He has a wife, Michele Hallett, and two daughters, Sophia Hallett (and Isabella Hallett)
Hallett left Esher in the summer 2010 to play a part in Esher’s promotion to National League 1 to Championship. He also joined Ealing Trailfinders to play two divisions lower in National League 2 South. Hallett enjoyed first team rugby again, and was part of a Trailfinders side that won the title. They scored 337 points, which included Phil Chesters, who set a new record with 70 tries. After missing out on promotion to Jersey, Hallett spent another season at the club. He then decided to join Wimbledon’s London regional side as a coach for the 2012-13 season. This combined playing with teaching at Wimbledon College. He would spend the last years of his tennis career at Wimbledon, helping them win the London 1 South title 2015, before retiring at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.
The Barbarians were attracted to Hallett’s performances at club and country, which led them to include him in their 2006 tour. In the final game of the tour, he made his Barbarians debut. He scored a try and converted and was named man-of the-match. His side beat the Georgian national team 28-19 in Tbilisi. The next season would see him make more Barbarian appearances, including against the East Midlands, Combined Services and British Army. However, he would not score any points for the Baas. He also made his England Counties XV debut in February 2007, scoring 10 points against an Irish Club XV at Donnybrook. Hallet contributed 21 points to England Counties’ victory over France Amateurs 41-10 at Rectory Field in March.

Hallett began his career at Rosslyn Park. He then moved to Bracknell, a National 2 side, midway through 2002-03 to become first team rugby. He rose to fame at Bracknell, where he enjoyed a stellar 2003-04 season that saw him finish 3rd in the division with 239 points. This helped his team to a respectable 7th place finish. After only four games, Hallett made the decision to join Esher, his divisional rivals. The right decision was made as Bracknell were relegated by the end of the season. Esher, however, managed to stay up. Hallett’s excellent kicking contributed greatly to the club’s survival. Hallett’s best period at Esher was 2005-07. He finished as the divisions highest scorer twice with 302 and 398 points, culminating in Surrey winning the league title and being promoted at the end the 2006-07 season. Although the club was able to survive for several years in tier 2, a change in the divisional structure in 2008-09, which included the creation of RFU Championship, saw Esher relegated to tier 3, despite finishing 12th.
After an outstanding debut season with Esher Hallett was selected to the Surrey squad for the 2005 County Plate competition (now Shield). His good form helped his county qualify from the group stage. This included a man of the match performance against Dorset & Wilts that scored 28 points. Surrey will face Somerset in the final at Twickenham after they have won their semi-final fixture. After beating the south-west team in the group stages, Surrey proved too strong. Hallett contributed 9 points with the boot, helping his side to the first County Championship silverware since 1971.
Towards the end of his career playing at Wimbledon, Hallett was still very much involved with the Surrey County side. He was called up to take part in his counties 2013 County Championship Shield campaign (formerly known as the plate) and was made captain. Despite being in the twilight of his career, Hallet showed that class was permanent, contributing 61 points including 3 tries as Surrey stormed their way through to the final. At Twickenham Surrey managed to overcome a resolute Cumbria 21-16, with Hallett’s 11 points, including 3 penalties, proving to be vital as his county won their second Shield title. The following season, Hallett would return to county action for the last team, captaining newly promoted in the 2014 County Championship Plate competition. Once again Hallet was outstanding as Surrey went on to win the Plate competition, contributing 73 points overall. He saved his strongest performance for the final with a massive 24 points including 6 penalties helping Surrey overcome Leicestershire 39-16.
