Nathan Hines, born 29 November 1976 in Australia, is a former Australian rugby union and rugby league player. He was a representative player in rugby league (RL), for Scotland, as well as a club footballer for the North Sydney Bears’ Presidents Cup side in NRL.
Hines was a substitute in the second half of the 2006 Six Nations Championship match against Wales at Murrayfield, 13 March 2005. His try was disallowed due to lack of grounding. Hines was said to have been dissatisfied with Scotland’s coaches (Matt Williams, Willie Anderson), and he declared his retirement from international rugby. Hines was able to return to the team after the dismissal of his previous coach and the appointment of Frank Hadden as Scotland coach. Hines made his return in 2006 as a substitute for England’s Six Nations victory at Murrayfield. Hines toured South Africa in 2009 with the British Lions and the Irish Lions. He was a prominent player in the midweek matches, but did not take part in the Tests.
On 4 July 2009, it was reported in the French media that Hines would be joining 2008–09 Heineken Cup winners Leinster for the 2009–10 season. Hines became a regular starter and a crowd favourite for Leinster, he won the 2010–11 Heineken Cup with the Irish province.
On 9 November 2011 Hines announced his retirement from international rugby with immediate effect. This meant he started and ended his Scotland career at Eden Park, Auckland. Hines won a total of 77 caps and scored two tries (10 points).
Hines made his Test debut in New Zealand for Scotland in 2000. However, two severe injuries cost him nearly 18 months of his life. His grandfather George Nairne, a Govan native, qualified him to play for Scotland. When he was sent off against the USA Eagles, he became the first Scotland player to be dismissed in a Test match. He had been punching replacement hooker/flanker Dan Anderson. He was an integral part of the Scotland squad that participated in the 2003 Rugby World Cup which was held in his home country.

Hines attended Berkeley Vale Community High school, where he and Stringer played together in the first XIII. It is also the school that produced Wallaby’s star Adam Ashley-Cooper, and Olympic marathon runner Martin Dent, who was also a City to Surf winner. Hines was also part the Premiership winning Ourimbah Razorbacks United 19s Rugby Union team, the same club Ashley- Cooper played for.
Hines was born in Wagga Wagga (NSW). From 1989 to 1994, he attended Berkeley Vale Community High school and was a regular member of the school’s first XIII Rugby League team. He was a member of the Berkeley Vale Panthers Junior Rugby League Club, where he played club football. In 1991, he was part the club’s first ever Premiership winning team (U/15s), defeating Woy Woy. Paul Stringer would be his NRL counterpart.
Hines won league and cup titles with Gala RFC, before signing for Edinburgh. He moved from Edinburgh to Perpignan in the 2005 off season.
