Narendra Kumar Pandey is one of the most popular and richest Indian surgeon who was born on January 1, 1951 in Sayan, Gujarat, India. Narendra Kumar Pandey was the third child of Jagat Pandey and Vidya Pantdey. He was born in Bishnupura in Saran district, Bihar, India on January 1, 1951. His early education was at the village school, where one of his uncles was an educator. He had to finish his schooling at different places because his father joined central government service. They were posted at various locations in north India. Pandey, who was inspired by a uncle who was a doctor, chose a career in medicine. He also completed his residency at Patna Medical College in 1974.

Pandey served as an official examiner at the MRCS, FRCS and FRCS examinations of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 2000 to 2000 and the National Board of Examinations India (NBE). Pandey is also a member of the National committee on health of the Confederation of Indian Industry. He is also a senator of the Teerthanker Mahaveer University, and the Governing council of the College of Indian Surgeons. He is also the director of Lakhani India Ltd and Blue Sapphire Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., Escorts employees Welfare Ltd. Turquoise House of Design and Trading Pvt. Ltd.

The Government of India, in 2014, honoured Narendra Kumar Pandey, by awarding him the civilian honour of Padma Shri. The Government had earlier conferred on him the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, in 2008. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He has attended many national and international conferences and has delivered keynote addresses. He was a Guest of Honour at the third World Congress of the Laparoscopic Surgeons, organized by the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, on 14-15 February 2012, at the World Laparoscopy Hospital, Gurgaon.

Narendra Kumar Pandey is an Indian surgeon, hospital administrator and the founder of the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, known for his expertise in Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of medicine.

In 1997, the Delhi Doctors’ Association conferred Pandey with the Distinguished Service Award. In 2010, he was also awarded the Betadine Achievement Award by the Association of Surgeons of India. He was awarded the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by Teerthanker Mahaveer University in 2013.

Pandey began his career at the Danapore Block Hospital in a suburb of Patna. He stayed there for one-year. He married Padma in 1975 while working at the blockhospital. She was a student at Patna Science College. In 1976, Narendra Kumar Pander left the block hospital where he was disillusioned by the work, which was mainly vasectomies. He moved to London in order to pursue further studies. Pandey was able to pursue more opportunities after moving to London. He redid his surgery internship at the Ashford Hospital in London and at the Aberystwyth District General Hospital. He also worked at Barnstable’s District Hospital. In 1982, he completed his FACS at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Forrest and Professor Blumgart, as well as gain experience in minimal access surgery and liver and pancreatic surgeries.

Pandey, who returned to India in 1984, joined Fortis Escorts Hospital in Faridabad as a consultant. He remained there until 2007, when he was appointed the Hospital’s executive director. Pandey was also a member of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute’s board of directors. He was determined to build a medical center of his own, and he founded the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences in 2010.

Narendra Kumar Pandey founded the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences on 1 February 2010. The institute is a super specialty tertiary care medical institution, in Faridabad. and is reported to have facilities to accommodate 350 in-patients at a time. The institute is claimed to provide the patients with preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative, palliative and support services. Pandey is the chairman and managing director of the institution and his sons and daughters and their families assist Pandey in running the institution. The hospital is accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) and National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).
