Dasari Prasada Rao is one of the most popular and richest Indian surgeon who was born on January 21, 1950 in Koppole, Andhra Pradesh, India. Dasari Prasada Rao (born 21 January 1950) is an Indian Cardiothoracic surgeon. He was notable for an open-heart surgery for the first time in the State of Andhra Pradesh in India and for pioneering the use of advanced medical treatment that was affordable. Dasari Prasada Rao has won many awards, including in 2001, the Padma Shri award, a Civilian award conferred upon him by the Government of India.

A new hospital dubbed Mediciti was established by the Share foundation in USA. The cardiac surgery program established in 1994. The year 1997 saw a brand new company was established under its name as Quality Care India Ltd with Dr. Dasari Prasada Rao as director of the company as well as vice chairman. Cardiac surgery was among the main pillars of this company. Many hospitals were marketed by this company.

Since there was a need for developing public enterprise hospitals with similar technology to that currently available internationally, it was felt new hospitals could be developed in the public sector. Rao was offered the post of Director of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad in 2004.

In 2009, he launched India’s first speaking book in any regional language through World Medical Association, Nizam and Pfizer India introduction of the Indian versions of a “Speaking Book in Telugu for clinical trial participation” to increase awareness about participation in clinical research.

Returning in India around 1985, the doctor began his coronary bypass program in Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad. The program was developed into safe surgical procedures for patients within a the next few years. Different types that involved cardiac surgical procedures were introduced to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences programme. Residents who were trained at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical sciences spread across various regions of Andhra Pradesh to start new programs.

Rao was born on the eastern coastline in India in a small village that had no modern facilities. He was educated in local high and elementary schools before going to university at Vijayawada in India and Guntur in India. He began Medical School at Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India and finished his General Surgery Residency in the same medical school. He received the M.B.B.S & M.S. at Guntur Medical College. Attracted by the new developments in heart surgery that was being performed in India and abroad, he enrolled at All India Institute of Medical Sciences as a cardiac surgery resident and then completed an M.Ch education in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, in the year 1979. Because the training offered in India at the time did not include the procedure of coronary bypass, he went through New Zealand and England to pursue further education in cardio surgery of the thorax. Then, in Auckland, New Zealand, He worked closely together with Dr. Brian Gerard Barratt Boyes (1924-2006) co-author of the The textbook on cardiac surgery, along with Dr. Kirklin and was trained by him at the Greenlane Hospital, Auckland.
