Uehashi began her career as a writer in 1989. The Sacred Tree was her first book (Jing Ling noMu – seirei no ki). The novel O God, sleep Ye in The Forest of Moon was her next book. The Japanese Association of Writers for Children awarded her this novel, making her one of the most famous Japanese-fantasy writers.

In 2003 Guardian of the God (Shen noShou RiRen, Kami no Moribito), won another Japanese award by the Shogakukan publishing house. In 2003, Uehashi also wrote Beyond the Fox Whistle (Hu Di nokanata, Koteki no Kanata), which won a Noma Children’s Literature Award. She wrote two volumes of The Beast Player in 2006 (Swu noZou zhe, Kemono no Soja). In 2009, she added two additional volumes.
