Krohn was interested in politics when he was eight after learning about the Democratic filibuster of nominees for the judiciary within the United States Senate. This event inspired him to conduct research on American historical events and the governing regulations and policies. Eventually, Krohn developed an interest in conservatism . He began listening frequently at conservative radio stations, especially Morning in America with William Bennett and William Bennett, with whom Krohn became a frequent caller.
Prior to his time as a journalist, Krohn created and published the autobiography Defining Conservatism, in which he laid out the fundamental conservative values. Krohn convinced doubting organizers to allow the event to run for three minutes during CPAC’s CPAC ceremony on Feb. 27th the 27th of February, 2009. His speech was well received by the crowd, and later gained a lot of attention online, gaining Krohn’s attention from national news shows which air on CNN along with his own Fox News Channel. In 2012, he confirmed to Politico that he no longer considers himself a conservative, and in fact takes a liberal point of view on many issues, including same-sex marriage and the Affordable Care Act. He also said that if he were old enough to vote in the 2012 presidential election, he would vote for Barack Obama. However, he refused to describe himself as liberal, instead rejecting ideological labels entirely. Krohn attributes his change to reading works of philosophers such as Nietzsche and Wittgenstein. He said that he rejected social conservatism first, before rejecting other conservative viewpoints. Krohn stated that he had matured and described his 13-year-old self as “naive”.
In 2011, Krohn openly declared he no longer held conservative views, a change he attributed to his study of philosophers and maturing with age.
The first day of January, 2009 Krohn reached out to the organizers for the Conservative Political Action Conference and requested for a spot on the conference. The organizers were skeptical, but offered him a three-minute slot on a panel that focused on grassroots activists. The speech was delivered the 27th of February, 2009 and outlined the conservative values set out in the book. After the speech had ended the moderator of the panel said, “Watch out, David Keene,” refers to the chairperson of the American Conservative Union. The following day, in the same conference William Bennett said, “I used to work for Ronald Reagan and now I’m a colleague of Jonathan Krohn’s!” The speech caught the attention of the nation’s media outlets, and was a hit on the internet. Sam Stein of The Huffington Post stated of the speech “It was filled with the type of rhetorical flow and emotional pitch one would expect from a seasoned hand. His writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Atlantic, Salon, and Mother Jones among other publications. In March of 2013, Krohn was made the International Affairs and Politics fellow for Kurdish media company Rudaw’s English language news website.
Krohn published Defining Conservatism, which was self-published in 2008, at the time the author was just 13 years old and felt that the term”conservatism” was frequently misinterpreted. The book was in large part an answer to the criticism John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate, was subjected to about his conservatism-based credentials. The book describes four core ideas of conservatives that include acceptance of constitutional rights under the United States Constitution, opposition to abortion, less government and a greater personal accountability. Krohn continued to apply the principles to contemporary events and decide if specific actions violated these fundamentals. It was dedicated Ronald Reagan, William F. Buckley, Jr. and Barry Goldwater, whom Krohn says are his political heroes together with South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint. Krohn paid for the book published with money he saved from his savings. He said it was an “first effort” and immediately began to plan to write a sequel one. He stated that it would be primarily based upon Alexander Hamilton and James Monroe.
Krohn wrote a column for Human Events, a weekly conservative newspaper. Krohn wrote a second book, Defining Conservatism: The Principles That Will Bring Our Country Back, released February 2010. The book was praised by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and syndicated radio host Mike Gallagher, who said of it, “Any time I am depressed about the state of the country or the future of the modern conservative movement, I consider two words: Jonathan Krohn.” Gingrich offered to write the foreword for the book, but Krohn wanted it to be written by William Bennett. Krohn attended the 2010 Conservative Political Action Conference, but did not have a speaking role. Krohn also spoke at several Tea Party protests.
