Her father, Dr. Arshad Mlik, was a former federal secretary of the Government of Pakistan. He studied public administration at St Antony’s College University of Oxford. Arshad Malik was a government official for almost 35 years. He held numerous senior positions and headed prestigious companies. He retired to pursue education and community service. He also served as a senior professor of management sciences. Dr. Arshad Mlik is the author three collections of beautiful Urdu poetry: zard paton, umeedon, ka safar, and Andheron se anagay. Razia Arshad, Nadya’s mother, is the youngest child of H.M. Habibullah Paracha. He was a dynamic businessman and politician, social worker as well as an ambassador for Karachi, Pakistan. Mahnaz Malik is her younger sister and an internationally- respected lawyer. She is also the author of Mo’s Star, published by Oxford University Press. She attended St Joseph’s Convent in Karachi, Pakistan, where she completed her school years. Nadya then attended Kinnaird College in Lahore and completed her B.B.A. In 1993, she received her Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) at the Institute of Business Administration in Karachi. Broken Souls was her first collection of short stories. It was published in 1995. Nadya was married to Abbas Rahimtoola in 1995. He is a well-known, international businessman. Abbas studied at Brown University, U.S.A., where he received Magna Cum Laude, a double major, in Economics and International Relations.
In 2007-2008, Nadya completed a Certificate Course on Novel Writing at London School of Journalism. She enrolled in the Summer Programme for Creative Writing at Exeter College, Oxford University. She completed two workshops: writing fiction and writing to young adults.

During this time, Nadya started working on her second novel, Invisible Ties, which is now being published by Rupa publications, in August 2017. She is a certified psychotherapist and conducts workshops and talks, in Pakistan and Singapore.

She has also worked as a voluntary worker/teacher and counselor to street children. Her husband relocated himself to Singapore, where she decided to do her Masters in Contemporary Therapeutic Counselling (BMC, Singapore/ University of Hertfordshire, UK- 2011-2013). Her dissertation explored the relevance of secure base and attachment theory, related to early childhood issues. She obtained a distinction in her master’s degree.
