According to prosecutors, Heastie bought the home with money he had stolen from a non-profit charity. Carl Heastie stopped trying to sell the house after his mother died. Heastie was advised by his lawyer that it was not his obligation to do so. He later sold it for $200,000. A New York Times newspaper consulted an independent forfeiture expert who agreed that the judge’s order was not legally enforceable without a formal forfeiture arrangement, which the prosecutors did not obtain. The judge also instructed that prosecutors file a civil judgment against Heastie’s mother. The District Attorney’s Office was unable, in 2015, to answer questions about why no civil judgment was filed. Heastie’s Office issued a statement in 2015 about the incident. It stated that the lessons learned by the speaker (Heastie ) included admitting to errors and taking responsibility.

Heastie joined the Assembly in order to become one of the key negotiators for construction of a K-8 school. Heastie has also supported legislation that would require reporting of child abuse allegations against students in New York City. In 2013, he was elected Chair of the Assembly Labor Committee.
