Chalermchai Kositpipat is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on February 15, 1955 in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Chalermchai Kositpipat (Thai: echlimchay okhsitphiphathn , known as [tcha.lu:m.tchaj kho:.sit.phi.phat[RTGS: Chaloemchai Khositphiphat ; born 15 February 1955) is a Thai visual artist. He is primarily a painter. His work has been shown throughout the world and he is well-known by his use of Buddhist images in his artwork.

One of his most notable works are Wat Rong Khun, an elaborate white Buddhist temple which is currently being built in his home province of Chiang Rai Province. The temple’s construction begun in 1997 and continues to be completed.

He was honored in 2011 by Thailand’s National Culture Commission as a National Artist.

Eventually, his work became more accepted, with Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej among his clients. One piece of his was sold for US$17,500 in 1998 at an auction of Thai art at Christie’s Singapore. Another one of his pieces, Food Offering to Monks, sold for US$59,375 in March 7, 2018.

He started creating movie ads on billboards. His first murals blended the traditional Thai Buddhist temple art with contemporary art, which was controversial. He was nevertheless commissioned in by the government in 1988 to design the murals of Wat Buddhapadipa located in London. The murals took about four years to complete and they were controversial due to the modern-day style. “I got complaints from everybody – from the [Thai] government, from monks and from other artists, saying that what I was doing was not Thai art,” the artist was quoted in 1998.

Chalermchai Kositpipat is a member of a Sino-Lanna clan. His father was an Chinese immigrants from Guangdong and the mother of his is Thai Chinese. He went on to attend Silpakorn University, which was Thailand’s first visual arts institution. He earned the bachelor of fine arts in Thai art in 1977.

In the year 1980, Acharn Chalermchai Kositpipat travelled to Sri Lanka as his first foreign trip. He stayed for six months. He studied Sri Lankan architecture, sculpture painting, as well as Buddhist temples. He was inspired by the white temples and statues located in Sri Lanka. Acharn Chalermchai collaborated closely with Sri Lanka’s renowned artist Manju Sri. In the year 1980, Acharn Chalermchai had his own art show in the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Following the show, he took his art pieces to Thailand and then sold them all.

“Only death can stop my dream, but cannot stop my project,” Chalermchai was quoted as saying about the temple, adding that he believes the work will give him “immortal life”. He was the first visual arts honoree for the inaugural Silpathorn Award, created in 2004 to honor living Thai contemporary artists at mid-career.
