Moddi is one of the most popular and richest Norwegian musician who was born on February 18, 1987 in Senja, Norway. Pal Moddi Knutsen, born 18 February 1987 in Senja, Norway, is an activist, musician, and author whose current folk music often features songs of protest or justice.

Moddi’s fourth studio album, Unsongs, was released in 2016. It featured Moddi’s reinterpretations of and translations from banned and censored music from 12 countries. The album featured artists such as Pussy Riot, Izhar Ashdot and Mari Boine (Norway/Sapmi), Liu Xiaobo in China, Kate Bush (UK), and Izhar Ashdot in Israel. Moddi published “Forbudte sanger”, a book detailing the various attempts to keep the songs off the album. This was done by both the Russian and Lebanese authorities as well as the British public broadcaster BBC.

Moddi made a music video at the King Oscar II Chapel to release his version of Pussy Riot’s song Punk Prayer in 2016. This was the Northern border that Russia and Norway shares. Moddi was also pressured to drop the song during his concert at Kirkenes that year by Russian diplomats.

Moddi’s first album was released in 2007. It was distributed in 20 copies. The debut album Floriography was recorded in Iceland with producer Valgeir Sigurdsson. It featured songs from Knutsen’s time in Nature and Youth. Q magazine called the album “a beautiful piece of melancholic folk music that is irrevocably heartwarming.” Moddi’s second album featured the single House By The Sea. It is his most well-known composition.

Moddi is well-known for his strong political commitment to his music. Moddi rescinded his nomination for the EUR100 000 Statoil grant in January 2010, stating that it would be inconsistent with his environmental commitment. Moddi declared in 2014 that he would cancel his concert in Tel Aviv (Israel) because he was not going to be seen as supporting the Israeli expansion in West Bank settlements. Moddi did not endorse any organized appeal and stated that the debate was “too black and white”.

In 2019, Moddi released his fifth studio album “Like in 1968”, inspired by the events that occurred in 1968.
