Muliaina was the second All Black to achieve 100 caps in the World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina 2011. Muliaina scored 33 tries for New Zealand, and remains one of the 30 most prolific try scorers in rugby union testing history.

He was a star in Southland’s age group representative team. Muliaina attended Cargill High School and Southland Boys High School. There he excelled at rugby, which earned him a scholarship to Kelston Boys High School in Auckland in 1998. Muliaina was a member of the NZ Secondary Schools’ XV team that won the world championship. Muliaina did the same thing again with the Under 19 world champion side. He was also part of the 2001 and 2000 world champion Under 21 (NZ Colt), teams.
Muliaina was an Auckland Blues player in 2001. He also played for the Super 12 champion Blues team in 2003. Muliaina made his All Blacks debut against England in a test match at the Westpac Stadium, Wellington on 14 June 2003. Muliaina was later part of the All Black team at the 2003 Rugby World Cup. He was the All Blacks’ only player to be selected in 2004 for each test. Muliaina also participated in 11 tournaments with the sevens team. He won a Commonwealth Games gold medal at Manchester 2002. Muliaina plays fullback, despite his preference to play as an outside centre. He joined the Chiefs in 2006, and he won his 100th Super Rugby Cap with them in 2011.
As of 4 May 2014, Mils had signed a one-year contract for Irish provincial region Connacht in the Pro12. On 21 November 2014, Muliaina made his Connacht debut in a 43-3 win over Italian side Zebre at the Sportgrounds.
