Michael George Vellucci, born August 11, 1966 in Farmington (Michigan), is a retired professional ice hockey athlete. He is currently the head coach and general manager of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League. He was previously the head coach and general manger of the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League for 14 years and the head coach of Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League for 2 seasons.
After the 2013-14 season, Vellucci was fired by the Whalers and accepted a position as assistant general manager and director for player development with Carolina Hurricanes of National Hockey League. After three seasons, Vellucci was appointed the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, as their head coach in 2017. Vellucci was named 2019 AHL Coach of the year in his second season as Checkers’ head coach. Vellucci’s coaching won the 2019 Calder Cup for the Checkers, defeating the Toronto Marlies and Chicago Wolves. This was the Checkers first Calder Cup finals appearance.
Vellucci was the coach of the Plymouth Whalers (OHL) of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He won the Matt Leyden Trophy in OHL Coach of Year 2007 and became the first American to win it. He also led the Whalers in winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup that season and the Memorial Cup berth. In 2012-13, he was named OHL’s Coach and Executive of Year. Vellucci, who wanted to spend more time on his general management duties, resigned as Whalers’ head coach in December 2007. Greg Stefan took over. Stefan was the coach of the Whalers until November 2008. He resigned to become a general manager with the Carolina Hurricanes of NHL. Vellucci assumed the coaching duties.
