Michael Joseph Mottau, born March 19, 1978, is an American retired professional ice hockey defender who played in the National Hockey League. The New York Rangers drafted him in the seventh round at 182nd overall in 1997 NHL Entry Draft. Mottau was raised in Avon, Massachusetts. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Mottau is currently a professional scout with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Mottau was a four-year college hockey player at Boston College. He won the Hobey Baker Award as the top male collegiate hockey player in his senior season. In the 2000-01 season, he made his National Hockey League debut for the Rangers. In two seasons, he played 19 games for the Rangers and four with Calgary Flames in the 2002-03 season. Mottau spent four seasons in American Hockey League, before returning to the NHL with the New Jersey Devils in 2007. Mottau signed a 2-year contract with the New York Islanders on September 28, 2010.

Mottau signed a professional deal with the San Antonio Rampage (AHL) on December 7, 2012, after his chances of signing a NHL contract were scuttled by the NHL lockout. Mottau had 7 assists in 16 games. He was then released by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the end of the lockout and signed a one-year contract on January 13 2013.

On August 19, 2014, Mottau announced his retirement.
