Titilola Alexandrah Shoneyin, the youngest of six children, was born in Ibadan in south-western Nigeria in 1974. She is the youngest child of six and the only one. Her parents, Chief Tinuoye and Mrs. Yetunde Shoneyin (nee Okupe), were Remo indigenes hailing from Ogun State.
Ovalonion House in Nigeria published her first poetry volume, “So All the Time I Was Sitting on an Egg” in 1998. Shoneyin was a Distinguished Scholar at University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) in August 1999.
Her second volume of poetry, Song of a Riverbird, was published in Nigeria (Ovalonion House) in 2002. While living in England, she obtained a teaching degree from London Metropolitan University in 2005.
Cassava Republic Press, Nigeria, published Shoneyin’s third poetry collection, For the Love of Flight, in February 2010. Mayowa and the Masquerades, a children’s book, was also published by Cassava Republic, in July 2010.
Shoneyin’s first writing consisted mainly of poetry, short stories, and prose. In 1995, Shoneyin’s first published pieces in the Post Express. This included a story about a Nigerian woman that leaves her husband to marry an Austrian woman. This story sparked a dialogue about homosexuality in Nigeria.

Lola Shoneyin, born Titilola Alexandrah Shoneyin, 26 February 1974, Ibadan, Nigeria, is a Nigerian author and poet who published her debut novel, “The Secret Lives Of Baba Segi’s Wives” in the UK in May 2010. Shoneyin is a poet known for being outspoken, funny and adventurous. She has published three volumes of poetry. She was included on the Hay Festival’s Africa39 List of 39 Sub-Saharan African writers under 40 who have the potential and talent to set trends in African literature. Lola was awarded the PEN Award in America and the Ken Saro Wiwa Award for prose Nigeria. In 2010, Lola was on the UK Orange Prize list for her debut novel, The Secret of Baba Segi’s Wives. She lives in Lagos, Nigeria where she manages the annual Ake Arts and Book Festival. Brittle Paper named her African Literary Person-of-the Year in 2017.
She was six years old when she attended boarding school in the UK. She went to Cargilfield School in Edinburgh, The Collegiate School in Winterbourne, Bristol and Fettes Junior School at Edinburgh. After her father was detained by the military government, she returned to Nigeria and completed secondary education at Abadina College. In 1994/95, she received her BA (Hons), degree from Ogun State university.
Shoneyin completed her first novel in 2000. Her second novel, Harlot, received some interest, but the story of a young girl growing up in colonial Nigeria to make a fortune as a “Madame” remains unpublished. Shoneyin moved on to her third novel, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, which was published in 2010.
