Michael Steven Lapper, a former American soccer defender, was born August 28, 1970 in Redondo Beach. He played as a sweeper for most of his 15-year playing career. He also played in England and Germany. Between 1991 and 1995, he earned 44 caps for the U.S. national soccer teams, scoring one goal. He was part the U.S. team at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Lapper started his professional career with VfL Wolfsburg, Germany’s Second Division (1994-1995). He scored his first game for that team. He continued to play for Wolfsburg until Eckhard Krautzun (who had hired Lapper’s services) fired him. Lapper found himself in the same position as many American soccer players in Europe in those years. Gerd Roggensack was the new manager and Lapper couldn’t even make it to the substitute list. Wolfsburg was at the top in the German Second Division at the time Krautzun was fired. It was fourth by the end of the season and had not been promoted to the First Division. Lapper asked for a transfer, and the team sent him to Southend United in 1995 for PS100,000. Southend was attempting to get promoted to the Premiership at the time. - Lapper decided to leave Southend to join Major League Soccer (MLS). He did however have one last stint in English football when Halifax Town signed him to a rolling contract in the latter part of 1999. He soon left the club after his time there was unsuccessful.
When Lapper signed with MLS, the league allocated him in June 1997 to the Columbus Crew. While with that team, he played 110 games, starting 99, until his retirement in 2002. Additionally, he scored five goals and assisted on 10 more.
After retiring from playing, he joined the Columbus Crew’s front office as the Director of Soccer Business Development, which focuses on the growth of the Crew’s camps, clinics and soccer academies. During the 2005, season he officially joined the coaching staff. Following the 2013 MLS season, Lapper parted ways with the Crew and became a member of the West Virginia University men’s soccer staff.
Lapper made his debut in the United States against South Korea on April 7, 1991.

Lapper was a youth soccer player in the North Huntington Beach Untouchables youth team. He graduated from Marina High School in Huntington Beach. From 1988 to 1991, Lapper played college soccer at UCLA. Lapper was a UCLA Bruin and won the 1990 National Championship. He also earned first team All American honors. Lapper played in college with the Los Angeles Heat of Western Soccer League in 1989 and 1988. In 1989, he was named to the WSL First Team All- Stars.
Lapper was a member of the U.S. 1991 Pan American Games soccer gold medal soccer team, 1992 Summer Olympics soccer team, and the 1995 Copa America soccer team that placed fourth at the tournament. He was a sweeper in every U.S. match in 1993. Lapper was relegated from the bench to Alexi Lalas when Bora Milutinovic switched to a flat back four defensive system. He did however make the U.S. team that hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The team lost to Brazil in the second round. However, Lapper was unable to participate in any U.S. games.
He played several more matches at the end of 1994 and into 1995, but on August 16, 1995, he earned his last cap in a losing match to Sweden. He ended his national team career with 44 and scored one goal.
