The accusations aimed to riguardarono different tax-related crimes such as false accounting and fraudulent bankruptcy. Cato was cleared of only 9 out of his 12 charges and the other three were declared to be required.

Giampiero Catone (born on June 1, 1956, on the island of Naples, Campania) is a famous Italian journalist and politician from Italy.
On the 9th of May, 2001 Catone had been arrested along with his twin brother Massimo and 12 others for conspiracy to commit aggravated fraud, forgery and false corporate communications, and aggravated fraudulent bankruptcy. Catone was charged with two fraudulent bankruptcy cases totaling L25 billion each, as well as the illegal acquisition of L12 billion in non-repayable funds through fake documents. On February 23, 2012, Catone was sentenced at the first trial to eight years of imprisonment for the incident.
In the 2008 general election Catone was again elected in the Chamber of Deputies with The People of Freedom. On 23 September 2010, he left the PDL’s group to join Future and Freedom. On 14 December 2010 he decided to vote the trust to the Berlusconi Cabinet and he announced the abandonment of FLI, to switch to the mixed group.
