Kerrigan was a Canadian Football League rookie and led the Ti-Cats in a victory of 39-15 over the Edmonton Eskimos at the 74th Grey Cup. Kerrigan was named the game’s best player. This was Hamilton’s first Grey Cup title in 1972 and their first win against the Eskimos since 1977. The Ticats were 12-point underdogs when they entered the game. In a two-game series, they defeated their archrivals, Toronto Argonauts to reach the Grey Cup. Kerrigan completed 35 of his 47 passes to set a CFL playoff completions record.
In 1989, he led the Tiger-Cats in the Grey Cup defeat to Saskatchewan Roughriders by 43-40. This was a thrilling Grey Cup that many consider the best ever. He left the Ti-Cats to play four seasons with the Toronto Argonauts in 1992. He returned to the Ti-Cats mid-season 1995. After the 1996 season, he was the Tiger-Cat’s all-time leading passer.

Kerrigan was a quarterback at St. Cajetan Grammar School, Chicago, along with undrafted free agents Phil Carlin and Brian Murphy, Gil Lindgren, and Tom Lusk. Kerrigan, an undrafted agent from Northwestern University, spent his first three professional years as a third-string quarterback after Tony Eason (and Steve Grogan). Kerrigan saw his first professional game on December 19, 1983 when he replaced Tony Eason in the fourth quarter against the Seattle Seahawks. He was 6 for 14, for 72 yards, and ran once for 14 yards during a loss to the Seattle Seahawks (24-6).
He was a backup to Tony Eason, Steve Grogan, and appeared in one game against Indianapolis. He completed one pass for 13 yards and led the offense on a fourth quarter touchdown drive. After the 1984 season, he was released and signed with Hamilton Tiger-Cats of CFL.
