Michael Christianson, born April 7, 1965, is an American professional football coach and college player. Christianson was most recently the assistant running backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers (NFL), and Director of Technology in 2013-2014. This Super Bowl XLVII matchup saw Christianson face off against the Baltimore Ravens (47). Christianson was also a member of the University of Michigan’s Head Coach Jim Harbaugh’s team at USD. The Toreros of Pioneer Football League won a Division I-AA Mid-Major National title. He also worked as a coach at several other National Collegiate Athletic Association institutions (NCAA), including The University of Nebraska and Montana State University. Christianson was a member Jon Gruden’s team and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He coached the offensive lines in 2002-2003. Christianson was a tight-end player and an offensive lineman at Western Oregon University.
As the assistant offensive coach for the 2002 Super Bowl XXVII Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Gruden was his first NFL coaching job. After a brief stint as a contractor with the Oakland Raiders, he moved with Bill Callahan to Nebraska in 2004 and 2006. He was the senior offensive assistant, helping Callahan with all aspects of the program. He helped Jay Norvell develop the west coast offense in Lincoln. During his tenure, the Huskers defeated Michigan in 2005 Alamo Bowl. He was responsible for overseeing the execution of one of Nebraska’s largest athletic technology projects.
In 2012, Christianson coached in his second Super Bowl after joining the San Francisco 49ers in February 2011. Working closely with Tom Rathman, Christianson played a major role in 2011 in the development of the 49ers rushing attack and in mentoring veteran player Frank Gore to his 5th 1,000 yard season. Gore became the 49ers all-time leading rusher in 2011. Christianson coached running back Frank Gore in 2012 when Gore was named to the NFL Pro Bowl.
Christianson moved to Montana State University in 2000 from Portland State, where he was a coach for the Bobcats’ tight-ends.

Christianson started his coaching career at Western Oregon University in 1991. He spent four years as the coach of the offensive line and tight-ends. He was the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers’ (NAIA DivII) recruiting coordinator and tight ends/running backs coach for one season in 1995.
The Big Sky Conference, and Portland State University (PSU) were his next coaching assignments. He was the assistant offensive line coach at PSU and the Vikings running backs coaches for three years. He is most known for his role in the development of Charles ‘Chip” Dunn, one of the most prolific runningbacks in Portland State’s history. Dunn, who was at PSU between 1997 and 2000, ran for over 6,000 yards as a Viking. He is also a member of The Portland State Athletics Hall of Fame. Dunn was ranked 35th among the Top 50 All-Time Big Sky Conference Athletes in 2013.
After working with Jim Harbaugh at the Raiders, he joined the staff at the University of San Diego (USD) in 2006. At USD, Christianson worked as the tight-end coach and assistant offensive Line coach with current University of Southern Cal Run Game Coordinator/Runningback Coach, Tim Drevno. During his tenure, USD won the Pioneer Football League championship and an NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championship. That year, USD led the Nation in passing offense, total offense, and scoring offense. He also coached USD starting tight end Chris Ramsey to a 2nd Team Mid-Major All-American honors.
