In 2004, after Ellinger was promoted to the head coach of Real Salt Lake, Hackworth was promoted to the head coach. He was the coach for the team during the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2005 and 2007. On the 9th of November of 2009, Hackworth was hired by the newly expanded MLS Philadelphia Union as a coach and Youth Development Coordinator.
