Stuart Milk (born December 26 1960) is an American LGBT human rights advocate and political speaker. A nephew of civil rights pioneer Harvey Milk, he is the co- founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation. He has participated in national and international activism as well as work with LGBT movements across Latin America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
The year was 1985. Milk delivered his very first big public speech in 1985 as an “out” LGBT activist alongside The Times of Harvey Milk producer Richard Schmiechen at Oberlin College in Ohio. In the year 1985, Milk was employed as a campaign director of National Citizen Action, a progressive political advocacy group that was located in the western region of Pennsylvania.
Milk was involved with getting legislation signed creating an annual California State Day of Recognition named after his late uncle in 2009. His involvement was cited as a reason he received Equality California’s Champion Award that year. In 2010 he worked with then California First Lady Maria Shriver in designing the first public museum exhibit on Harvey Milk in Sacramento, and he accepted his uncle’s medal and induction into the California Hall of Fame from the Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“When I think about Uncle Harvey, I think about, even as a small child, the kind of the richness and color of life that he brought to me. Harvey was the person who introduced me to Broadway, and Broadway musicals”, Stuart said in 2009.
Milk has been working on public policy since the mid 1980s in both the private and private sectors, focusing mainly with regard to issues of employment for young people and the disadvantaged throughout the U.S. and abroad. Apart from his human services work as an expert on LGBT rights in universities, colleges and other public events such as the Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, University of San Francisco, SUNY, Central European University, University of Oxford, University of San Diego, as grand marshal or speaker for many LGBT Pride parades. These include San Francisco and Orlando in 2008, Istanbul and Madrid in 2009, Boston and San Diego in 2010. Pittsburgh as well as Budapest in 2011, and Tijuana as well as Atlanta for 2012. He has also delivered speeches at various political conventions, such as those for in the California Democratic Convention and Florida Statewide Conventions in 2010 and 2009.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the murder of his uncle in 1978 ended his “closet door” for Stuart Milk. In the 20th anniversary of Harvey Milk’s demise, Stuart stated that he was able to speak out immediately following the murder of his uncle as a living and active tribute. “Earlier that year, Uncle Harvey and I had a three-hour talk at a family gathering, he talked to me about being your authentic self. Milk was active in the 2012 U.S. presidential election as surrogate for incumbent Barack Obama, speaking to primarily LGBT audiences on behalf of the president at public campaign events, to the media and for the Obama For America organization.
