Matthew Jason Watkins was a Welsh international rugby league player who served as a centre. He lived from 2 September 1978 to 7 March 2020. To avoid confusion with another Welsh rugby league player, he was often called Matthew J. Watkins.
Watkins, who was studying to become a rugby coach, developed a rare form of pelvic cancer. However, he said that he is still “well and active”. Watkins, 41, died on 7 March 2020.
Watkins signed a two-year contract with Newport Gwent Dragons, and it was confirmed on August 3, 2009. At the end of the 2010-11 season, he was released and soon retired.

Watkins was born in Newport. He began his rugby career at Newbridge and Pontllanfraith, before becoming a professional with Newport in 1997. Watkins was signed to Llanelli after scoring 35 tries (75 points) in 121 games over five seasons. He was part of Llanelli Scarlets’ original regional side, and part of the first wave of rugby in Wales.
He was the third player to make 100 appearances for the area, after prop John Davies and lock Adam Jones. Watkins signed for Gloucester in the middle of a three-year contract with Scarlets at the end 2007-08.
