He continued his participation in school and the Exeter Chiefs junior teams, following the example of Keith, who captained Exeter in the 1960s. While studying at Cardiff University, he also played for Wessex. Matt was a graduate of Wessex and spent a year playing for Manly before returning to the UK where he joined Plymouth Albion.
Hopper made his competitive debut in round 5 against Sale Sharks. He also won his first Heineken Cup start against Gloucester, scoring a try. Matt was given a chance to play in the first XV after George Lowe suffered an injury. He played seven matches, including one against Toulouse away. Hopper impressed many and was rewarded by a call-up to Stuart Lancaster’s Saxons squad for the Irish Wolfhounds match on 28 January 2012.
In Harlequins’ 2011-12 Premiership victory over Leicester Tigers, he was their replacement.

Matt Hopper, born 29 January 1985, is a Harlequins rugby union player in the Aviva Premiership. He plays primarily as a Centre, but can also play Fullback.
After two years at Plymouth, Hopper moved to Cornish Pirates in 2010 after a successful stint. Despite being defeated by Worcester in the RFU Championship Final 2010, Pirates were relegated to second place. However, the dynamic style of the Pirates attracted the attention of several Premiership clubs. Hopper was then recruited to Harlequins in 2011.
ON 13 April 2017, Hopper to leave Harlequins and join French club Oyonnax in the Top 14 from the 2017-18 season.
