He was fifteen years old when he was chosen to the USA 15’s Churchill Cup team in 2010. In 2010, he won his first cap against Russia.
After sustaining a serious injury, Hawkins began coaching the Belmont Sevens team in 2009 with James Walker. He coached Belmont to their first National Sevens Title that year. Hawkins was again the coach of the Belmont Sevens Team in 2010, and he also played. In 2010, Belmont was able to qualify both their A- and B sides for the National Sevens Championships. Belmont finished second at the final hurdle that year. Hawkins was back in 2011 to coach the Belmont Shore Sevens Team. They won the National Championships for the second time in three years.

Hawkins was a loose forward for Old Mission Beach Athletic Club in his first visit to the U.S. and helped the club win the 2006 National Super League title.
Hawkins was named to the 2007 United States National Rugby Sevens Team Pool. Hawkins made his debut for the USA Eagles in 2008 at the New Zealand and USA stops respectively of the World Rugby Sevens Series. Hawkins’ Sevens achievements include reaching the final of The Adelaide Sevens in 2010 and making it to the semi-finals of the 2009 USA Sevens. Hawkins was the captain of the sevens team for the 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 seasons. At the time of his retirement, he was among the most successful Sevens Eagles.
On August 1, 2013, USA Rugby announced that Hawkins would take over as head coach of the Men’s Sevens National Team, after Alexander Magleby’s decision to step down. The US fared poorly under Hawkins, however, finishing a disappointing 13th on the World Series, and Hawkins was removed at the end of the 2013-14 season.
