Mathew James Murray Tait (born on February 6, 1986) is a former English union rugby player who earned 38 cap for England between 2005 and 2010. This included playing at the 2007 Rugby World Cup Final; and played in 279 club matches in the clubs of Newcastle Falcons, Sale Sharks and Leicester Tigers between 2004 and in 2018. He was thought to be a utility back , regularly playing in the centre position, as a fullback, or the wing. Tait was a part of the squad for his Newcastle debut in 2004 before making his England debut at the age of 18 old in 2005. He was dropped after the game but later regained his place in the England squad, missing out on the first game of England’s 2006 autumn campaign against New Zealand only through injury. He last played a full international for England in 2010.

On 3 May 2008 Tait agreed to a deal to leave the Falcons to sign for Sale Sharks. Tait was linked up with All-Black centre Luke McAlister.
