The Chalom/Gates team was not eligible to participate in at the 1997 Winter Olympics because he was not yet an American citizen. They placed fourth in the 1998 U.S. Championships. They were directed by Coates and Igor Shpilband until the end of the 1997-98 campaign and later switched for Christopher Dean and Warren Maxwell in Plano, Texas. In their final year together Chalom/Gates were awarded their second silver medal at the national level and placed 17th at the 1999 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

In January 2002, Gates tried out with Emilie Nussear on the advice of a coach, Tatiana Tarasova. Nussear/Gates won the silver medal at the 2002 Karl Schäfer Memorial and placed 5th at the 2003 U.S. Championships. They were coached by Tarasova, Nikolai Morozov, and Maia Usova in Newington, Connecticut.

Mathew Gates (born June 29 1975) is an American from Britain who was a professional ice dancer. Together with Eve Chalom, he is the 1996 Nebelhorn Trophy silver medalist, and two-time (1997 1999) U.S. national silver medalist. He has been awarded seven times consecutively in the US National Championships from Novice to Senior levels. Gates is two-time World athlete and is a part of Team USA.

Gates joined forces along with American skater Eve Chalom in 1992, after a trial in Boston organised by Coates. They were determined that they would represent United States. After winning national championships at the level of novice in 1993 and at their junior team in the year 1995, the pair won bronze in the 1996 U.S. Championships in their first year as senior players.

Gates began working as a coach and choreographer by 2000. He has coached skaters from the beginner level up to World & Olympic level. Former students include: Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, Zachary Donahue, Nikolaj Sorensen, among others. He is also an International Technical Specialist for the United States. Gates currently coaches in Charlotte, NC though travels to choreograph for international skaters.
