In addition to being an outfielder, Kotsay was a closer in college; he pitched the final five outs to clinch his team’s CWS title. Kotsay was a consensus choice as an All-American in 1995 and 1996.
Kotsay was selected by the Florida Marlins as the 9th pick of the 1996 Major League Baseball Draft.
