Mike Junkin is one of the most popular and richest American Football Player who was born on November 21, 1964 in North Little Rock, Arkansas, United States. Michael Wayne Junkin, born November 21, 1964, is an American football linebacker. He played three seasons in the National Football League (NFL), with the Cleveland Browns (now the Kansas City Chiefs). He was a part of 20 games during his NFL career.
Junkin played four seasons of college football for Duke University. The Cleveland Browns traded Junkin up in 1987 to pick him as the fifth overall selection. He was a part of parts of two seasons with the Browns. Both of these seasons ended prematurely due to injury. Junkin was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a fifth round selection. He played in five more games. He did not play in another NFL game after his release from Chiefs. He is considered a draft bust because he failed to make a name for himself in the NFL.
In early 1989, Schottenheimer was fired as Browns head coach, and took the head coaching job with the Kansas City Chiefs. He still had faith in Junkin, unlike the Browns, and traded a fifth-round pick to bring him to Kansas City. Two weeks after the trade, a report came out that Junkin had taken steroids provided by a doctor to treat an injured ankle, and had failed a drug test at the scouting combine as a result. Entering the 1989 Kansas City Chiefs season, Junkin competed with Walker Lee Ashley for the second inside linebacker spot alongside Dino Hackett. Ashley won the job, and Junkin played five games before a shoulder injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. He was released from the Chiefs after season’s end, and retired after not being signed by any team through the 1990 season.
Junkin became known as a draft bust due to his unproductive career. An ESPN article in 2008 noted Junkin noted as the eighth biggest draft bust of all time. He was also named one of the Cleveland’ Browns worst three draft picks from 1995 or earlier.
The Cleveland Browns selected Junkin with the fifth overall selection in 1987 NFL Draft. The Browns traded Chip Banks and their first- and second-round draft picks to San Diego Chargers in order to acquire Junkin. Marty Schottenheimer, the head coach, stated that Dom Anile, a scout, had seen him play and likened his playing style to a “mad dog in a meat marketplace.” Anile did not see him as a second-round talent, despite the quote. Schottenheimer decided to select Junkin with the fifth overall pick, overruling his scouts. The Steelers, Browns archrival, were shocked at the pick. They had expected Shane Conlan to be selected by the Browns after trading up. However, Kelly Stouffer’s selection in St. Louis and Conlan’s selection in Buffalo allowed the Steelers to pick Rod Woodson, a future Hall of Fame cornerback. This was a nightmare for the Browns for many years.

Junkin was the son of Kirk Junkin, a United Airlines pilot and Doris, an substitute teacher, in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Trey Junkin, his brother, was also an NFL player. Junkin was a Belvidere High School student who played tight end for the football team. He was named the team’s captain and MVP in 1982, his senior season. In 2013, he was inducted into the Belvidere Bucs Football Hall Of Fame.
Junkin, who had played inside linebacker in college during the 1987 Cleveland Browns season was expected to be the starting outside-linebacker. This led to criticism from the league that Junkin would have to make a difficult transition. After a 16-day standoff, Junkin and the Browns agreed to a four year deal that was nearly two million dollars. He made his debut against New York Giants after missing the St. Louis Cardinals’ first preseason game. He did not record any tackles in the second half of that game. He was unable to learn the position of outside linebacker and made it to the roster but was eventually replaced by Anthony Griggs. Junkin made his debut after the Browns switched to a 4-3, defense in the second game against Pittsburgh Steelers. The plan was to increase Junkin’s playing time each week. Junkin was injured in his wrist and a player’s strike, and was therefore placed on the injured reserve and replaced by David Grayson on the active roster.
Due to a combination of the Browns drafting Clifford Charlton and Junkin’s desire to move back inside, the Browns planned to move him back to inside linebacker for the 1988 season. He spent training camp competing with Eddie Johnson for the second inside linebacker position alongside Mike Johnson, and by the end of preseason play, Junkin had won the starting job. In his first career start against the Kansas City Chiefs, Junkin had six tackles, including the first one of the game in a 6–3 Browns win. A month later, Junkin injured his knee, and was forced to miss several games. He returned to the team in early November, but Johnson had played so well in Junkin’s absence that he spent the next few weeks as the backup inside linebacker. He was given the starting job again to end the season, but missed tackles and a lack of impact plays led to his second season being considered a disappointment.
