Cornelia Ernst (born 30 November 1956) is an German politician and a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Germany. She is an active Member of The Left Party, part of the European Union The Left Nordic Green Left.

Since 2009 Ernst is a Member of European Parliament. Her first year, she served on the Board of Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left. She was also an active participant in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, an alternate for the Committee on Regional Development and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality and a member of the Delegation to relationships with Iran. After her reelection in 2014, she was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and was appointed a substitute to the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. In addition to the Iran delegation, she was appointed an official member of the Delegation for relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Kosovo. In addition, she was elected as president for the German Delegation of Left party.

She was elected to the Parliament of Saxony in 1998. Then, in November of 2001 Ernst was elected chairman, succeeding Peter Porsch. Following the amalgamation between WASG and PDS to form the political party DIE LINKE she got elected as the chairman in the State Association for DIE LINKE in Saxony. In the state parliament, she was an active member of the Home Affairs committee Affairs and also a member of the commission for Constitutional, Legal and European Affairs. In her capacity as a local politician, she was an elected member of the City Council in Dresden.

After graduation from the secondary schools in 1974, and her admission into the SED she completed her degree/diploma in education science in 1979. Ernst received her PhD in 1983 from Leipzig University with the thesis on “Zur Geschichte des Internationalen Frauentages in der Ubergangsperiode vom Kapitalismus zum Sozialismus auf dem Gebiet der DDR (1945/46 – 1961)” (English”The background of International Women’s Day in the transition between socialism and capitalism within the borders of the GDR (1945/46 between 1945 and 1961) and also a teacher instructor at the department for teachers’ education in Grossenhain.

From 1991 to 1999 Ernst was an advisor to the parliamentary group of the state-led parliamentarian committee of PDS in Saxony as well as a substitute chairman of the PDS in Saxony.

She was elected to the European Parliament in 2009, prior to which she had been a member of the Parliament of Saxony from 1998. From 2007 till 2009 she had been the regional chairman of the Left Party in Saxony. On 15 February 2014 she got voted on place 3 of the group of nominated candidates of the Left party for the European Parliament and was re-elected to the European Parliament in 2014.
