The year 2000 was when it was clear that his career in rugby was over , as he tried to be selected for the Waikato NPC team. However, he was chosen for the Chiefs team to play in the Super 12 in 2001, and was granted the All Black recall that year and played in two Tri-Nations games. A back injury that was serious caused Cooksley to leave the team in the middle of the year.
In 1997, after being absent from the All Black side since the 1995 tour to France, Cooksley was drafted into the Wellington Hurricanes for the Super 12. Cooksley performed well throughout that season and helped the Hurricanes to make it to the semi-finals. He received the All Black call-up for their year- end trip of Britain and Ireland however Cooksley only played in midweek games.
