Mataele was born at Suva, Fiji. He attended Marist Brothers High school in Suva. He represented Marist Brothers High School in Suva in the Junior Boys Boys Long Jump at the Coke Light Games in 2010. He won a silver medal for a jump of 5.87m. He won silver in the same category, jumping 6.00m. He competed in 2 events, including the Boys Long Jump Intermediate Division where he won another silver medal jumping 6.70m. He also participated in the Intermediate 4x100m relay team, which won gold. Queen Victoria School was the opponent of his school. Sevuloni Rease, a Waikato winger, helped them to beat Queen Victoria School.
He made his debut against Hawke’s Bay later that month scoring a 50m attempt in their 55-28 victory. As a child, he lived with his uncle Seta Tamanivalu, who was from the west (Lautoka). He also studied at Lelean Memorial School, which was located in Suva.
In November 2016, he was signed by the Crusaders and he would join his uncle, Tamanivalu and Fijian winger, Jone Macilai-Tori at the club for the 2017 Super Rugby season.
