Three minutes after the Border Bulldogs’ first match in the 2015 Currie Cup qualifying tournament, he scored a try. His side beat Griquas to win the match. This was the team that won the qualification tourney in 2014.
In April 2017, the Free State Cheetahs announced that they contracted Mapimpi until the end of the 2018 season.
He made his test debut for the Springboks on 2 June 2018 against Wales in Washington, D.C. at the age of 27 years.
After the professional side went bankrupt, he was among the many amateur club players who were brought into the Border Bulldogs province set-up. He was part of their 2014 Vodacom Cup team and made his debut against the Sharks XV in their first match. Border lost the match 24-16, but Mapimpi made his class debut shortly after half-time. He also played in the 6-60 defeat to Eastern Province Kings, and the match against Simba XV. Mapimpi scored the Border Bulldogs second try in that match, helping them to an 18-17 victory, which was their only win of the competition. He also participated in the four remaining matches of the competition. His third attempt of the campaign was in their match against SWD Eagles. The Border Bulldogs were at the bottom of the log.

He was retained by the Currie Cup qualifying campaign for 2014. On their opening day of Currie Cup competition, he lost their 5-52 match to Griquas. After missing their match against Boland Cavaliers’, he started their four remaining matches. The Border Bulldogs fell to bottom of the log, losing all six matches. They qualified for the 2014 Currie Cup First Division. Mapimpi again began all five matches of their match, including the first match against Falcons. This was the Border Bulldogs only win of the season, as they won 19-14. He scored consecutive tries against the SWD Eagles, a Leopards team that finished at the top of the log, but couldn’t stop the Bulldogs finishing bottom of the log with one win.
Mapimpi returned in the 2015 Vodacom Cup, but ended up on the losing side in their first six matches in the seven-match competition. Mapimpi was the star performer in their final match of the season against the Boland Cavaliers in Alice; he scored a hat-trick of tries and, with regular kicker Masixole Banda unavailable for this match, also took over the kicking duties and slotted three conversions and a penalty. He finished the match with a personal haul of 24 points in the Border Bulldogs’ 29–5 victory to help them overtake the Boland Cavaliers on the Southern Section log.
