McCarthy was the first Victorian state representative to compete in the Penrith Cup for lightweight fours at the Interstate regatta of the Australian Rowing Championships. He raced in the same event for New South Wales in 1985. He was back in Victorian darkblue for the event in 1990, and that year he won the interstate championship title. He competed for Victoria in 1992, his final state appearance at the Penrith Cup.
In 2003 and 2005, he was named Australian Institute of Sport Coach of the Year. In 2015 and 2016, he was Rowing Australia’s Coach of the Year. In the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours, he was awarded Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for service to rowing.
McCarthy coached crews at the World Championships and was appointed Head Women’s Coach for 2009, 2010 and 2011 World Championships.
He won a bronze medal at the Australian men’s lightweight 8 in 1978 FISA Lightweight Championships, his first international major event. He was fifth in the Australian lightweight eight for twelve years, but he returned to the World Championships in 1990. He was again a participant at the 1992 and 1991 World Championships, and he retired in 1992.

In 1977 and 1978, he contested the national championships titles in lightweight rowing at the Australian Rowing Championships. He raced in the Mercantile Rowing Club’s lightweight pair title race in 1980. He moved to Melbourne University Boat Club in 1981, where he was home to world champions Simon Gillett (and Charles Bartlett). In a lightweight eight, he won the Australian National Title in MUBC colours with Peter Antonie, Charles Bartlett, and Gillett. He also contested that year’s national lightweight coxless four title. He was back in Sydney in 1982 and raced with the Balmain Rowing Club at that year’s Australian Championships, where he won the national lightweight eight title for men. He won the 1985 national lightweight eight championship with a Sydney composite crew.
McCarthy was a lightweight oarsman who competed in the Sydney and Melbourne races over a 15-year first class rowing career that spanned 1977-1992.
McCarthy began coaching in 1994 with the Barwon Rowing Club at Geelong, Victoria and was appointed Australian Institute of Sport/Rowing Australia’s Head Women’s Coach located in Canberra in 1997. After the 2016 Rio Olympics, he was appointed Rowing Australia’s Pathways Head Coach.
