His usual position is lock, but he has also played backrow for Wallabies, particularly as blindside flanker.
National coach Michael Cheika placed Lukhan Tui in Australia’s bench in the match against South Africa at Bloemfontein in 2017. He made his international debut on 30/09/2017, replacing Adam Coleman who had been injured in the first hour of a tied 27-all Test.
In 2015, he signed a 3-year contract with the Queensland Reds. On 16 April 2016, Tui made his Super Rugby debut against the Bulls at Pretoria.

In 2014, he joined Randwick’s rugby union club to play for the colts. He was a member of Randwick’s first-grade Shute Shield team in 2015 and was named Lukhan Lealaiaulolo Tui for the Australia under-20 team at the World Junior Championship in Italy.
In 2015, he was selected for the Queensland Country team for the National Rugby Championship. However, he suffered an injury and did not play for that side. He made his NRC debut for the Brisbane City team the next season.
He changed his name to Lukhan Salakaia-Loto later as an adult in 2018 following the death of the stepfather who had raised him, hyphenating Salakaia as the surname of his late stepfather, mother and siblings with Loto from part of his birth father’s last name. Lukhan’s Samoan bloodline comes from the villages of Lelepa in Savaii and Faleula in Upolu.
