He was part of the South African Under-20 team that participated in the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship, France. He was a part of their two first pool matches. He did not play in the match against France but was reinstated to the starting lineup in the semi-final clash with Wales where South Africa lost an 18-17 match. De Bruin also played in the run-on team that faced New Zealand in the third-placed playoff. South Africa won 41-34 against New Zealand to finish third in the tournament.
De Bruin was included on the reserve bench for the Cheetahs’ second-last match of the 2014 Super Rugby season against the Sharks in Bloemfontein.
De Bruin’s first taste of senior provincial rugby came during the 2014 Vodacom Cup competition for the Free State XV after the 2014 Varsity Cup concluded. He made his debut when he was named in the run-on side for their match against the Eastern Province Kings in Cradock, helping his side to a 31–3 victory. That was the first of five consecutive starts De Bruin made during the competition as they reached the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out by his former side, the Blue Bulls.
De Bruin participated in four matches during the Free State U21 Provincial Championship 2013. He also played in another Varsity Cup campaign with the UFS Shimlas.

De Bruin was selected for provincial selection in primary school in 2006. He was part of the Blue Bulls Under-13 team that competed at Craven Week. He was selected for the Blue Bulls Under-16 Grant Khomo Week team in 2009 and played in the Craven Week Under-18 competitions in 2010 and 2011. He was selected in the South African Academy team that played in Durban against a France Under-18 team after the tournament in 2011.
De Bruin relocated to Bloemfontein in 2012. De Bruin made 11 appearances for the Free State Under-19 Provincial Championship side, and he started ten of them. He played at the beginning of the 2013 season for UFS Shimlas, the university side. There he made six substitute appearances.
In July 2014, De Bruin signed a new contract with the Free State Cheetahs until the end of 2016.
