Lionel Letizi, a former professional goalkeeper in French football, was born 28 May 1973. He was a goalkeeper for France’s national team in four matches.

His error led to Dunfermline scoring an equaliser in a 1-1 draw on 13 August 2006. Letizi was able to recover in Rangers’ next game, helping them to win 2-0 over Hearts. He then succumbed to injury. Letizi controversially returned to the side after two months of being sidelined despite the impressive performances of his replacement Allan McGregor.

After the departure of Le Guen, Letizi’s future at Rangers appeared uncertain and he was released from his contract with the club on 30 January 2007. Letizi had not played since October 2006 and featured in just eight matches in his six-month stay, keeping only one clean sheet in that time. He subsequently joined his first club, OGC Nice.

Paul Le Guen, manager, had made it clear that Letizi would be the number one player at the beginning of the season. This was not surprising. The decision was challenged when Inverness Caledonian Thistle won a surprise 1-0 victory at Ibrox on 14 October 2006. Rangers were now 10 points behind Celtic after ten SPL games.

Letizi was born in Nice and began his professional career with OGC Nice in

1994. He won the French second division. After reaching the French first Division, he was noticed by several clubs before joining FC Metz. He was a Metz finalist in the French League Cup 1999 and runner-up for the French first division. He joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2000 to be able play in the Champions League. After six years of being the first choice at PSG, he decided to move on after Mickael Landreau’s signing.

He was capped four times by the French national team, but he couldn’t replace Fabien Barrthez. He was part of France’s initial squad of 28 players to the 1998 FIFA World Cup at home. He was however one of six players who were axed by Aime Jacquet, the head coach, just before the tournament started. France won the tournament and became national heroes.
