Walter Lee Sweatt (born August 13 in 1985) was an American former professional player in ice hockey. Sweatt played for four years playing professional hockey throughout Europe as well as North America. Sweatt played in three games of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 2011 before resigning for work within the finance sector. While at Colorado College, Sweatt maintained an average grade point (GPA) at or above 3.0 while majoring in math economics. He was able to make the WCHA All-Academic Team as a sophomore as well as a junior and senior hockey player (freshmen aren’t eligible to be considered for this distinction). As a junior, he received recognition with the Paul Markovich Award as the Colorado College Tigers’ top student-athlete. He also won WCHA student-athlete of the Year awards following his graduation with an 3.8 GPA in 2007.
He joined the American Hockey League (AHL) immediately after completing his senior season with Colorado, signing an amateur tryout contract with the San Antonio Rampage on March 22, 2007. Appearing in 11 games for the remainder of the 2006-07 AHL season, he registered 1 assist. Also in 2007, Sweatt debuted with the United States’ national select team in international competition.
After a one-year stint with the Junior A Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Sweatt played four seasons in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) with the Colorado College Tigers. During his senior year with Colorado, he served as team captain and received All-WCHA Third Team honors. Graduating with a degree in mathematical economics, he was named the WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year in 2007.
Sweatt was a junior player in United States Hockey League (USHL) for the Chicago Steel before joining the college ranks with the Colorado College Tigers. He scored 16 points over 37 games in his freshman season in 2003-2004. In the following season the player climbed to a career-high of 27 points as he helped Colorado to win the MacNaughton Cup as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) regular season champions (shared with the Denver Pioneers). Captaining the team during his senior season the player scored a career-high 9 goalsand added 15 assists and 24 points. Alongside being his team’s top defenseman for scoring, Sweatt was named to the All-WCHA Third Team.

Sweatt started skating inline at age eight years old to improve his skating abilities for the ice hockey. He began playing for the IIHF InLine Hockey World Championships as part of the United States national team in 2002. In seven consecutive years at the annual event, Sweatt won two gold (2004 and 2006) as well as a silver (2009) and two bronze medals (2003 and 2005). In 2008, at the IIHF InLine World Championships in Slovakia, Sweatt was named the tournament’s best defenseman. He scored four goals and four assists over six games, placing 9th among defensemen of tournament scoring. The United States finished fourth in the tournament, but lost against Germany at the Bronze Medal match.
Sweatt is also a player inline hockey on an international level, representing his United States’ national team in 7 consecutive IIHF InLine Hockey World Championships between 2002 and 2009. In 2008 Sweatt was awarded the Most Outstanding Defenseman award. He also been a part of the United States national select team on two occasions, one in 2007 and the other during the 2009 Deutschland Cup.
Undrafted and unsigned by an NHL team, Sweatt joined Finnish club TPS of the SM-liiga for the 2007–08 season. Competing in his first full professional season, he recorded 15 goals and 33 points over 56 games, second in team scoring to Teemu Laine. Spending the 2008–09 season with EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Hockey League, Sweatt scored 36 points over 52 games, second among team defensemen to Mario Scalzo.
