Holmes was able to return to non-league football after signing with Isthmian League Premier Division club Enfield in the year 1980 for a cost of PS5,000. Holmes helped the Es to finish second and a promotion into the Alliance Premier League at the close of the season in 1980-81. He enjoyed a great time in the top ranks of football in non-league Enfield which won both the 1981-82 FA Trophy and the 1982-83 Alliance Premier League championship. He played in more than 100 Alliance Premier League appearances and scored 19 goals for Enfield and then left at the close of the 1983-84 season.

Holmes was given a chance to play league football when he joined to Third Division club Brentford on an interim contract during August of 1979. Holmes scored his first goal in the League Cup first round defeat to Southend United and went on to score seven goals over the course of 30 appearances in his 1979-80 campaign. Holmes’ contribution for the club was so great that coach Bill Dodgin offered Holmes a full-time contractwhich Holmes refused and then he left Griffin Park.

Holmes was let go without playing in a senior match and then moved into non-league football, signing with Athenian League club Haringey Borough which he played for until the end of August.
Holmes signed for Conference club Dagenham in 1987 and played for one season before ending his career with spells at Dartford and Leyton-Wingate.
