He served as head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2005 and during the 2008-09 season, then became head coach of the Houston Rockets in 2011.

He, Robert Parrish, and Larry Bird formed the Big Three for the Celtics, bringing three NBA championships to the city of Boston in the 1980s.

The 6 ft 10 in (208 cm) McHale played basketball at the power forward position for the University of Minnesota (the Golden Gophers) from 1976 to 1980, with career averages of 15.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
