Phillipus Jacobus Snyman ‘JP’ du Plessis (born 29 April 1991 at Kroonstad) is an South African rugby union player who plays in the centre of San Diego Legion in Major League Rugby (MLR).
Du Plessis returned to South Africa in 2011 , signing for Cape Town’s Western Province. He played seven times in Western Province’s Western Province U21 side during the 2011 Provincial Championship for Under-21s and scored five tries, which included four during their 38-42 loss against the Golden Lions U21s in Johannesburg.
He was included in the Stormers’ 2012 Super Rugby squad. He made two appearances for them off the bench, a 23–13 victory over the Reds in Brisbane and a 17–3 victory over the Western Force in Perth a week later. He also made seven appearances for Western Province in the 2012 Vodacom Cup and scored a try against the Eastern Province Kings.
He didn’t feature for the Stormers in the 2013 Super Rugby season and opted to move to France to join Top 14 side Montpellier prior to the 2013–14 Top 14 season. However, he failed to break into the first team at Montpellier due to suffering a knee injury and featured in just one match for them, coming on as a late replacement in a 25–18 victory over Grenoble.
He was one of the two South African youngsters that moved to Australia to join the Australian rugby league team that is the Sydney Roosters, the other being Brian Skosana. He was never a part of the team in the first place, however he did represent the team’s Under-20 squad at the time of the Toyota Cup.

Du Plessis grew up playing the game of rugby union South Africa starting his career as a schoolboy from Reitz High School in Reitz before moving into Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. Du Plessis was chosen as a representative of Western Province at the Under-16 Grant Khomo Week tournament in 2007 and was also a part of the top university rugby union tournament within South Africa, the Under-18 Craven Week in 2009. After the event He was also selected as a member of the 2010 South African Schools squad. He was a bench player in their 86-3 loss to Italy and scored the only goal in their 13-45 loss to England just three days later.
In the year 2010, Du Plessis reverted to the union of rugby, and joined his Rebels Super Rugby side for their first season of Super Rugby in 2011. He played one Super Rugby appearance for the Rebels in the form of an in-between replacement for their game with the Hurricanes.
Still eligible for play at Under-21 level, he played for the Western Province U21 side during the 2012 Under-21 Provincial Championship and scored one try in their match against the Leopards U21. He was then called up to their Currie Cup side and made nine appearances for them during the 2012 Currie Cup Premier Division. He scored tries in their matches against Griquas and the Blue Bulls to help them finish in third spot on the log to qualify for the semi-finals. However, he didn’t feature in the semi-final or the final (which Western Province won by beating the Sharks 25–18) instead reverting to the Under-21 side; he played in both their 19–18 semi-final victory over the Sharks U21 and their 13–22 defeat by the Blue Bulls U21 in the final.
