Joy Neville (born 24 July 1983) is a former Ireland women’s rugby union player and currently a union rugby referee. As a player, Neville played for Ireland in each of the 2006 as well as the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cups. In 2009, Neville was captain of an initial Ireland team to beat France. In 2013, she was one of the players on one of the very initial Ireland women’s team to take home the Six Nations, Grand Slam and Triple Crown titles.
Neville was a student at Salesian Secondary School where she played in a variety of sports like squash, basketball association football, badminton as well as field hockey. Her initial focus was basketball and was a part of the Salesian Secondary School basketball team that was awarded the All-Ireland schools league championship. Neville was just 16 and working at a local leisure center when a friend suggested she try the female rugby. She then began playing for Shannon which at the time were the sole Limerick club with a female team. In 2009, she joined UL Bohemians and would also play for Munster and help them win six Interprovincial championships.
On 20 October 2016 Neville served as an assistant referee for a European Rugby Challenge Cup game between Bath and Bristol, making her the first woman to ever officiate in a professional European rugby match. On 12 November 2016 Neville became the first woman to take charge of an All-Ireland League match when she refereed a game between Cork Constitution and Clontarf. On 23 September 2017 Neville became the first woman to referee an Excellence match when she took charge of a fixture between Petrarca and Lazio. She had previously referee in the Serie A.
By 2015 Neville was refereeing in the IRFU Women’s Interprovincial Series. On 20 March 2016 Neville made her debut as an international referee when she took charge of a Women’s Six Nations Championship between Wales and Italy. On 26 August 2017 Neville refereed the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup Final between New Zealand and England. She also served as a referee during the 2017–18 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series
Between 2008 between 2008 and between 2008 and Neville went to Limerick Institute of Technology where she earned a bachelor’s diploma in Social Studies and care. She also started working as a director of the rugby union at LIT as well as coaching the women’s and men’s teams. After she had retired as a player Neville got a call from David McHugh, an IRFU referee performance officer who asked her to become an official referee. In December 2013, she took the reigns of her first match which was one of the U15 match between St Munchin’s College and CBC. Then she started refereeing Munster Schools Rugby Senior Cup games.
