Katzen played in Wynberg’s Boys’ High School however, he was not chosen to represent his local union Western Province at any youth tournaments. After graduation however, he joined the Western Province Rugby Institute. In 2012 the year he was a player in the Western Province U21 in the 2012 Under-21 Provincial Championship. He was part of four teams throughout this season’s regular event which helped his team get to third place on the table to secure an automatic semi-final place. He also contributed a significant contribution to their final match of the regular season with two tries during their victory by 39-33 against Free State U21. He scored the 19-18 victory against their opponents the Sharks U21s, in their semi-final , and played in the final, but the team could not stop his team from losing 13-22 to their counterparts the Blue Bulls U21s. He also received the the Western Province’s Most Promising under-21 player during their 2012 season’s end-of-season awards ceremony.
Katzen was absent from a couple of games because of his involvement in the senior squad. He was a part of the Western Province squad for the 2013 Currie Cup Premier Division and made his debut in the class in the form of an extra in their 19-13 win against Griquas. He was again an extra substitute in their victory 29-27 against The Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein one week later. He was selected on the bench for the third time in succession in a game in the match against Golden Lions in Cape Town and was not utilized for the home team’s victory of 36-23.
Katzen picked up a shoulder injury that kept him out of the start of the 2014 season, but he recovered to make a single appearance in the 2014 Vodacom Cup, in a 14–23 defeat to the SWD Eagles in George. However, he lasted just 12 minutes of that match before sustaining a serious knee injury that ruled him out for over a year. He returned from the knee injury to play for Western Province in a friendly match against the Pumas prior to the 2015 Currie Cup Premier Division, but once again sustained a serious injury, on this occasion requiring an operating on both his shoulders, which ruled him out for the remainder of 2015.
