The end of the season of 2010-2011 Fa’amatuainu resigned from the Scarlets after he was not given a contract extension. Instead, he travelled into Japan and played for Coca-Cola West Red Sparks in the Top League. At the end of 2013, Fa’amatuainu enrolled in the Toyota Industries Shuttles where he played until 2015.
Initially, while at high school, Fa’amatuainu played basketball, not rugby. In that sport, he represented New Zealand at under-16 and under-18, and Samoa at under-20 age-group level. He started playing rugby relatively late, at the age of 18, when the rugby coach at his school (De La Salle College, Mangere East in Auckland) asked him to join their rugby team, because the team needed a flanker. After some hesitation, he agreed and it didn’t take long for his (international) rugby career to take off.
In spite of not having many minutes of playing time during the 2009-10 season because of the additions of England captain Lewis Moody and Scotland back- rower Simon Taylor at Bath, Fa’amatuainu departed Bath to join Welsh team Scarlets within the Pro12 for an one-season loan during in the season 2010-11.

Jonny Fa’amatuainu starred for Samoa’s Sevens team in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 editions the World Rugby Sevens Series. The Samoan Sevens team made him debut Samoa nation in the month of November of 2005 in a match against Scotland. He played 16 games for Samoa with his last game being match against Tonga in July of 2011.
On January 6, 2006, Fa’amatuainu enrolled in Bath Rugby in the English Aviva Premiership with a short-term contract but was then given a contract for two years a couple of months after.
