Johnny Leota (born 21 January 1984) is a union rugby player in the Sale Sharks in the Aviva Premiership. Leota is a native of Palmerston North, New Zealand and made his debut international for Samoa in the year 2011; he has since earned 20 caps. He played previously in the ITM Cup with Manawatu Turbos in the ITM Cup.

Johnny Leota is married to Liana Leota (nee Barrett-Chase) and is a netballer with the Silver Ferns and the Southern Steel. The couple was married in the year 2010 in Rarotonga and they have one child, Brooklyn.

Leota missed most of the 2010 ITM Cup through injury, making only two appearances for the Turbos. He returned to action with Manawatu for the 2011 season.

Leota was one of 25 players selected in the squad for the Samoan national team’s 2011 Pacific Nations Cup campaign, in the leadup to the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He made his international debut for Samoa against Tonga in Lautoka, Fiji. Shortly thereafter he returned to New Zealand and resumed provincial duties for Manawatu.

As of 2009 Leota continued to make 12 appearances with the Highlanders however, she was limited to just six games and mostly used as a substitute throughout the second period of the season.

Leota began his career with Manawatu in the year 2004 and grew into a regular for the province. He played his 50th game in 2009. In his switch towards the Highlanders in 2008, he joined Otago and was then transferred back to Manawatu.

Leota was selected to The Highlanders in 2008 for their Super 14 season, and became a key player in the team and played in 12 of the team’s 13 matches with two scores during the process.

Leota was not retained by the Highlanders for the 2010 Super 14 season, and instead found himself in the wider training group of the Hurricanes. However, he did not make an appearance for the squad and was not brought back after missing most of the 2010 provincial season through injury.
