Skelton was a student at Burges High School in El Paso His father was an assistant coach. He played baseball, basketball, football and track. After completing more than 2,172 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior football player and basketball, he was selected to the first team of All District I Class-AAAA honors and All-City accolades and was named the offensive Most Valuable Player by The El Paso Times in 2005.
