Deon La Velle Thomas (born on 24th February 1971) is an American-Israeli former basketball player. As a high school athlete the team he played for led him towards an overall Chicago Public League title, and was named Illinois Mr. Basketball. As a player in college from the University of Illinois, he ended his career as the leading scorer of all time of Fighting Illini history. Chosen by the Dallas Mavericks with the 28th selection in the 1994 NBA Draft, he “opted” to play professionally throughout Europe in Europe and Israel.

Since 2009 Thomas was named the basketball men’s trainer for Lewis and Clark Community College located in Godfrey, Illinois. On April 14, 2014 Thomas has been appointed as the assistant basketball coach of the University of Illinois in Chicago. He was recruited as a reporter for the Fighting Illini Sports Network to announce basketball games for men with Doug Altenberger.

Thomas was a top athlete at the Chicago’s Neal F. Simeon Vocational High School and graduated in 1989. In 1988, as a junior Thomas led his Wolverines in winning their first Chicago Public League title. In his senior year the team was awarded Illinois Mr. Basketball and participated in the McDonald’s All-American Game, which included the future NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal.

Larissas, the Bulgarian team CSKA Sofia, and then returned to Israel where he was a player with Givat Shmuel. Then he also played with Maccabi Haifa, also in Israel.
