In September of 2005 it was announced that Rooney was to leave his position on the White Sox’ radio crew after 18 years because of a dispute over his salary with the team’s new principal station. His last broadcast for his team came in World Series Game 4 in the 2005 World Series, which ended with his White Sox’ first Series victory since 1917. The following year Rooney joined the Cardinals radio station KTRS together with the former broadcaster and player Mike Shannon. The Cardinals took home at the time of 2006’s World Series, so Rooney declared consecutive championship seasons for teams. This was an unprecedented first for the major leagues.

Rooney was employed by CBS Radio from 1984 to 2003, broadcasting across the country various sporting events, including Major League Baseball, the National Football League, college basketball, and football. He hosted Saturday baseball telecasts on Fox Sports from 1996 to 1998, as well as Postseason Division Series games for ESPN Radio in 2003 and 2004 in addition to NFL broadcasts on Sports USA Radio Network. In 2004 the year he was admitted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
