He grew to the Paulsgrove neighborhood within the city. It’s odd that he was raised in the city that was a bit beaten by Southampton which is the team that he became famous for his time on, though the former Portsmouth player did play for Portsmouth at the conclusion in his playing career. After a long and successful time of youth football at the schoolboy and county levels and then he was the target of a variety of clubs, and appeared likely to sign with Portsmouth. But he was not able to make it through an interview with them, and instead joined Saints. Saints in September of 1966 as an apprentice. He was promoted to the professional ranks in February of 1968. He had a difficult time getting in the team when he was a rookie and made his first appearance April 7, 1969 with a goal against Burnley. But, it was only one of two goals that he scored in the season. The the following season (1970-71) and ravaged by injury, he just played in one game. In the 1971-72 season, the player played 41 times and scored seven goals. He was awe-inspiring in the following seasons, despite being relegated in 1974.

In in 1981 Stokes ran a bar in Portsmouth. He was a keen participant in horse racing, and remained an enthralled and respected character all over the southern coast. The pub wasn’t successful however, and Bobby accepted a position in his cousin’s restaurant on the harbor in Portsmouth. The year 1994 was the first time he received an honorary year at Southampton FC. He passed away at the age of 44 30 May 1995, following a bout of bronchial phlegm, at the same time that he was diagnosed with Ted Drake, another footballer who made his debut at Southampton. The club has honoured him by having one of the high-end hospitality suites at St Mary’s Stadium named after him, as well as Stokes Court, one of the buildings located on The Dell, the location of Southampton’s previous stadium, The Dell.

In 1976-77, his final season at Southampton, Stokes made only 11 appearances, scoring once. He was released from Saints as the club was operating in the Football League Second Division to join Southampton opponents, Portsmouth. Within a year of signing with them, he left Portsmouth to join Cheltenham Town.

Bobby Stokes (30 January 1951 30th January 1951 – 30th May 1995) was an English footballer well-known to score the winner in the 83rd minutes of the FA Cup Final for Southampton F.C. to Manchester United in 1976.

Stokes then moved to the US to play for the Washington Diplomats. He was a teammate of fellow American imports Jim Steele, his teammate in the final in 1976, Tommy O’Hara, Wim Jansen, and Johan Cruyff.

The year would be remembered for Saints reaching the FA Cup Final. Stokes had an average league campaign that season, scoring just 8 goals and he nearly left The Dell before the cup final as part of an exchange deal with Portsmouth for Paul Went. However, Stokes changed his mind and stayed. Stokes scored against Blackpool in the fourth round in a 3–1 victory. In the fifth round, Saints were drawn against West Bromwich Albion and were forced to put out a significantly weakened team because of a stomach virus which affected many of the first team. Stokes was not one of the players affected however, and he scored a late equaliser in the game to draw it 1–1. Saints subsequently won the replay and Southampton’s place in the final was sealed with a 2–0 semi- final defeat of Crystal Palace.
