John Liley is one of the most popular and richest Rugby Union Player who was born on August 21, 1967 in Wakefield, Michigan, United States. John Garin Liley (born 21 August 1967) is an English former union rugby player. A fullback who played 230 times with the Leicester Tigers from 1988 to

1997. He scored 2,518 points, the second highest ever. He also played with England but was not a part in a match of test.

Liley was a part of Liley’s participation in the Pilkington Cup Finals of 1993 and 1996. She won the final in 1993 against Harlequins and losing the final in the 1996 final to Bath. Liley made it to the Leicester team that was crowned league champions in 1995. He was also part of the 1997 Heineken Cup Final which Leicester lost to Brive.

When he played against Romania on September 4, in 1990 Liley became the fastest Leicester Tigers player to 500 points in just 43 games. In a match against Orrell on February 29, 1992, Liley became the fastest Tigers player to score 1,000 points in a mere 92 games. Both records have since been set with Joel Stransky and Tim Stimpson respectively. When he played against Exeter on the 23rd December 1995 he became the only player to achieve 2,000 points for Leicester Tigers.

Liley was raised in Wakefield He moved to Leicester after leaving Wakefield RFC. The player was made Leicester debut substitute against Orrell on the 8th of October, 1988 on Welford Road. The season that he started in coincided with the final season for Dusty Hare which limited Liley to four games and one appearance on the bench. Liley was first picked as a as Leicester’s fullback for their preseason trip towards Colorado, United States, in 1989, scoring three tries with Vail and scoring eight points in the process as Tigers were defeated by the USA national team.

The 1989-1990 season, which was his debut season as a first-choice fullback, Liley played 33 games and scored 439 points. Hare’s record of points scored during a season by just one point. Liley would surpass the record by scoring 446 points in 1995-96. Believing in his status as a kicking back, Liley recorded 18 attempts during the 1989-90 season, which led to being selected for England’s summer tour of Argentina. He was a part of 4 of the seven games on the tour with 15 points however, he was not a part of any international match to earn his acclaim.

After the 1996-97 season Liley was considered surplus to requirements by then Leicester coach Bob Dwyer, initially he joined Moseley in the second division but financial difficulties meant a quick move to Worcester who at the time were in the third tier. Liley spent a season and a half at Sixways helping the club to promotion before moving onto a player-coach role at Doncaster. He also coached Leicester’s sevens side at the 2000 Middlesex Sevens tournament. Since 2009 Liley has been expert summariser on BBC Radio Leeds covering Yorkshire Carnegie games alongside Gareth Jones, son of Leicester Tigers legend Bleddyn Jones.
